Chapter Eight

Okay, maybe I didn’t think this whole thing through enough. It sounded good in theory, especially if it kept Lindy close.

But now I’m mixing business with pleasure, and that’s a dangerous combination. I experienced that firsthand with Ana Petrov.

I needed her to help me find Yazov. But then I fell in love with her and she fucked with my head…both of my heads.

I got in deep…way too deep.

But she never cared about me. She screwed me, and then really screwed me, using me to get information she needed.

Information that could hurt my family.

Information that could get them killed.

Why the hell can’t I figure out how to separate business from pleasure?

I never fucking learn.

Lindy glares at me. Maybe the terms will make her less likely to jump on top of me and slash me with her long fingernails.

That’s definitely my idea of promising foreplay, but the glimmer of disdain in her eyes tells me in no uncertain terms that there would be nothing remotely sexual about the attack.

“I already know plenty about your little operation,” I say. “Your names and faces came up on our surveillance list of card counters to look out for.” I cock an eyebrow, my lips curling into a smirk. “You’ve obviously done well for yourselves. But that ends here and now.”

“Let my friends go,” Lindy hisses through clenched teeth. “I’ll deal with this. I made them do it. They never wanted to get involved.”

I bring myself down to one knee in front of her. Strong. Independent. Doesn’t run from risk. I knew all of these things about her already, so her words don’t surprise me at all.

Loyalty, though. That’s a new one. True loyalty is seen through action, and my girl here is loyal to a fault since she doesn’t even know what she’s getting herself into. She’s ready to throw herself into the flames without knowing if she’ll have even a sliver of a chance at surviving.

“Don’t you even want to hear the terms of the agreement?”

She shakes her head. “I don’t care. I’ll do whatever you want. Just let them go and don’t let your asshole guys lay a finger on either of them. I’ll deal with the consequences myself.”

I look over at her friends wiggling around in their chairs, tears running down their faces in black puddles. They’re shaking their heads, trying desperately to wave their arms. But Lindy doesn’t look at them. She just looks at me.

Once the girls are cut free and the tape is removed from their mouths, they run over to Lindy and hug her, crying and begging her not to stay. I didn’t have the guys free her just yet. I can’t risk that they’d try something even though I think we made it pretty clear that things would not end well if they did.

One of the girls stands up and walks up to me. She’s got on a blonde wig that is half-off her head and she’s the smallest of the three. “You can’t keep our friend.
